East Meets West 186 – Objectively objecting to objectivity
The uncomfortable pause when Roger disses bacon was priceless!
So I analyzed my exercise routine and my food intake and realized an easy fix to my problem: Stop eating two packages of Twix bars every day for lunch, thereby instantly reducing my caloric intake by 600 per day. It worked. Within six months I dropped 25 pounds, now weighing 187.
It's worth mentioning my exercise routine. I'm a mailman, so I walk and climb stairs five and a half hours a day. Also, I'm aware that calling it "The Twix Diet" is not strictly accurate. But it makes for fun telling the story. ("You eat only Twix?!")
I was wondering if you guys ever heard of the Shangri-La diet. All you need to do is either drink hot water dissolved with sugar once a day, or take a couple tablespoons of oil once a day (You do this in a 2-hour window where you're not allowed to eat/drink anything else except water). I really have no idea how it works, but apparently this simple act of consuming sugar water / oil once a day suppresses your appetite for more food. Apparently it works on the Pavlovian theory of weight control. My friend said to me that this guy essentially "hacked" the way his appetite works.
Anyway, I haven't tried it, but was curious if any of your listeners have heard of it.
OK. Here is my diet. It's back to the basics. I did it last year and went from 232 to 185. It is the Eat Less/Walk More Diet. I simply eat smaller portions of the same food that I love. (Pretty high in veggies and fiber) and started walking about 40 minutes each evening with my dog and catching up on Podcasts. Yours was tonight and I was laughing most of the way. (Listen, could I talk you into makeing the show about 40-45 minutes long...??)
Thanks, you guys crack me up.
Nice to see (well hear) V' on the show. I love the smell of bacon, the look of bacon but I hate the fat on bacon - so unless its super crispy (burnt even) i don't touch the stuff.
I remember having something else to say, but i have forgotten so bye for now and have CES!

1: No killing Veronica!
2: Great to hear V on the show again.
3: Moonpies are good, I like the banana flavored ones (least I think those were moonpies, could have been something similar)
4: Mmm, bacon..
5: I enjoyed Tom's ingest in jest joke, least it was funnier than the cowboy one.. (no offense)
6: My resolution is to not make resolutions.. so technically I already broke it..
7: This should make V happy, I actually prefer BOL to TWiT and Diggnation. They're all good, but BOL is just the right length of time.
8: East Meets West vs. Veronicabelmont.com though.. eh.. that ones a toughie.
9: I got Star Trek: The Animated Series on DVD for Christmas, have only watched the special features and one episode so far, so many DVDs so little time.
10: I agree mostly with Veronica on Enterprise though, wasn't the bets Trek, though the story arcs were good (that was one of the reasons DS9 is my favorite Trek, continuing plot line)
11: Tom said Jango was half Rottweiler, half German shepherd and some other stuff.. so Jango is more than 100% dog?
12: Mythbusters is awesome.
13: No Killing Veronica!
2. I also think that Roger should gets a date this year, get married and have children :)
3. Is that sandwich diet something like those Subway comercials?!
4. Tom, Rodrigo is comming for you in Gears of War, but not yet. He's having some problems to setup the Internets on the Xbox 360 in his newly furnished living room.
5. You guys should have more guests, is Molly going to be on "this thing" soon?
Well, you say "duh" now, but for many (including me), it was an enlightening moment. So I often eat a light salad or soup for breakfast. I found that eating "breakfast" made the biggest difference in my weight--I easily lost the pounds I wanted to lose, and I find it easier to maintain my weight.
I finished watching FireFly on DVD and just saw Serenity. Wow! Anyone know of some good podcasts to listen to to satistfy my Firefly withdrawal?
A friends wife spent New Years Eve in the hospital after losing 60+ lbs on a diet. She lost so much weight so fast (over 200 to under 150) her intestines got knotted up and twisted since her body fat wasn't holding everything in place as it had for the many years she was overweight. Just a warning to take any diet slowly and thoughtfully.
Oh, Tom, are you planning on updating the Boiling Point audiobook?

1) Hey Jayesh and other newcomers to EmW, you can listen EmW's 'BTTPCASQ' episodes by going to SubBrilliant.com/blog and looking for the tags to 'East Meets West' on the right. This is where to find such gems as 'Episode 8, The Ocho', 'Episode 13, The Evil Episode', and the April 9th, 2006's entry, the legendary first official 'EMW Delayed' posting!
2) Should anyone have fits of EmW withdrawal, may I suggest you play these two OTHER podcasts back to back. DL.TV episode 129 from Jan 9th, and Buzz Out Loud (BOL) episode 389, from January 10th, 2007.
The DL.TV episode features a fantastic interpretation of the word 'key' why Europeans and (especially) Asians are really into smartphones.
The BOL episode talks about why people in Denmark are happier than in any other Western country, and also about lifesaving parachute printers.
Have fun at your day jobs Tom and Roger. Waiting patiently for your next episode.
1) When (another other Steve) Jobs announced the iTV back in September, he said 'iTV' was a code name and it would be changed by the time the product was released. (I think he mentioned that there was another product with the same or similar name, presumably EyeTV from Elgato)
So now, in January, we hear that the device is to be released in February (5 months after it's announcement) and will be called Apple TV.
At the the same keynote, Jobs announces another product, which he calls iPhone. It is said to be available in 5 months. Cisco sues for trademark infringement right away.
The apple phone hasn't even gotten FCC approval. Am I the only one to think it's premature for Cisco to start complaining about a product that is at the moment, a tech demo? If Jobs said 'For NOW, we're calling it iPhone', would it have kept everyone from freaking over at Cisco? I didn't see any iPhone name on the device, just the Cingular name. (don't even get me started on the AT&T - Cingular thing)
Can't Jobs call the thing the Razr, the Treo, the Ford Taurus, or Miss Piggy, as long as the thing isn't even a product yet? It's what's on the box and on the device and in the ads for it that matters, right? Why all of the bruhaha now?
2) Since the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, I don't see anything stopping Apple from releasing a video/audio only version of it, for 200 dollars less for example, as a new iPod. They already applied to the FCC, for the phone, a similar application can be used for a device with less features, right? The phone looks cool and all, but I'd rather have just a widescreen video iPod myself. I'd pay 400 for that form factor and functionality. The only question is to have an 8 gig flash version, or a 80-120 gig hard drive version thats somewhat thicker, heavier and has a lower battery life.
East Meets West is the one i will be listening to very soon, i wished to download all episodes but at 64kpbs its really not that fast,
Anyway
Thx

Kim Jong Il loves movies, right? If he has any of those old 50s "B" movies, maybe he'll direct his atomic scientists to irradiate these bunnies until they're the size of bufallo :D
I only hope they don't find themselves in the pickle Australia did in the last centry. (I'm sure you're familiar with the tale, or you could always google Australia & rabbits)
What do you do when you live in a world that's beyond your ability to parody it?
